 March

Native Planting Day

Saturday, March 3, 9:00 a.m. - noon

CoLinx Wetland (1536 Genesis Rd)

We’ve got over 500 native trees and shrubs to get in the ground, so we’re having a planting push this Saturday from 9:00 to noon at the CoLinx wetland.  We won’t be planting in the marshy areas so don’t worry about that.  These are bare root plants so the process for planting is pretty easy.  We’ll meet at the lowest section of CoLinx’s parking lot (near the stream) and go from there.  Bring gloves and shovels if you have them, OWCA will bring its collection.  If you can’t come on Saturday, but would like to help, we’ll be planting for the next few weeks.  Let Dennis know when you are available (931-210-3611).

Preserving, Protecting and Cataloguing Plants – a hands on experience

Thursday, March 8, noon to 6:00 p.m.

Pennebaker Hall, TN Tech University

Dr. Shawn Krosnick, the manager of TN Tech’s Herbarium will instruct us on how dried plant material is used to make a permanent record of when and where plants are located. Working with specimens that have been previously collected, we will be remounting specimens on the special papers, creating standardized labels and bar codes for the specimens, and entering the finished specimens into TN Tech’s online catalogue so that the public can look up plants. The noon to six time frame includes travel time from Crossville. We’ll car pool from Common Ground (405 4th St), leaving at noon. People who want to drive independently, please be at Pennebacker Hall by 1:00. It’s an opportunity to both leave and provide an important service.

Frogs and Toads of Cumberland County

A listening experience

Thursday, March 22nd  4:00 p.m.

Common Ground, 405 4th St

We are much more likely to hear frogs and toads than see them, and many frogs and toads are particularly active vocally during the spring since they need water, ranging from puddles to streams and ponds, to lay their eggs and have the tadpoles survive to become adults.  Our popular Frogs and Toads slide show is complete with audio tracks so you can learn to identify the animals by their songs.  Come learn more.  If weather and temperature is right, we’ll go out to hear some frogs by some water after the workshop.
