Obed Watershed Community Association (OWCA) is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection, enhancement, and appreciation of the Obed River watershed and its tributaries.
Based in Crosville, Tennessee, OWCA brings together individuals, families, and community partners who care about the long-term health of the river and the surrounding watershed. Through stream restoration, stormwater projects, education, and best management practices, we work to protect this vital natural resource for current and future generations.

OWCA was formed by community members with a shared interest in preserving the Obed River and its watershed. Over time, the organization has supported conservation efforts, educational initiatives, and community activities focused on responsible stewardship and long-term watershed health.
Since its founding, OWCA has supported watershed education, conservation, and community engagement. Past newsletters document hands-on cleanups, educational programming, and partnerships that continue to shape our work today.
OWCA has undertaken a capacity-building effort to strengthen its ability to support water quality projects, expand educational and community activities, and improve organizational sustainability. Priority areas include watershed restoration and stewardship, education, outreach and partnerships, and watershed protection and advocacy.
OWCA has led multi-year restoration efforts funded through state grants to improve Tennessee waters. Projects have included wetland restoration at Lake Laura, including erosion control, invasive species removal, stormwater infrastructure improvements, and the installation of rain gardens using native plants and volunteer labor.
OWCA's work combines education, hands-on stewardship, and regional collaboration. Impact includes native tree distribution, stream cleanups supported by state grants, recycling education, and public engagement on water quality and land-use issues affecting the Obed River watershed.
In 2024, OWCA hosted multiple waterway cleanup events across the watershed, removing trash from creeks and rivers while engaging volunteers in hands-on stewardship. Cleanup sites included Daddy’s Creek, the Little Obed Wetland Complex, and the Emory River.
OWCA’s work combines education, hands-on stewardship, and community partnerships to protect the Obed River watershed. Recent efforts include native tree distribution, habitat restoration, youth environmental education, litter reduction initiatives, and public outreach focused on sustainable land-use practices.
In 2022, OWCA continued its long-standing commitment to watershed education, conservation, and community involvement. Activities included native plant education, public outreach events, guided hikes, tree distribution programs, and volunteer stewardship days throughout the Obed River Watershed.
The Obed River watershed is a valuable natural resource that supports clean water, diverse wildlife, outdoor recreation, and the surrounding communities of the Cumberland Plateau. Protecting the watershed helps ensure healthy systems, resilient habitats, and continued access for present and future generations.

OWCA holds an annual meeting to conduct organizational business, elect board members, and connect with supporters. In October 2021, OWCA's annual meeting was held at the Sherrill family farm, welcoming new board members and officers for 2022 while recognizing the service of outgoing leadership.
